Survivability
On Board Inert Gas Generating Systems (OBIGGS) use similar molecular sieve technology as OBOGS, but instead of concentrating oxygen, it concentrates nitrogen, which is then released into the fuel tank, displacing the explosive air/fuel mixture inside the tank. This eliminates the opportunity for an explosion resultant from enemy ground fire, static discharge or other ignition sources. An alternate method for generating nitrogen for OBIGGS is hollow fiber membrane (HFM) technology. Carleton Life Support Systems offer the benefits of both technologies to tailor a product to the customer’s application. OBIGGS increase the survivability of the aircraft and of the crew by eliminating the threat of fuel tank explosions when the aircraft is most vulnerable. |
